If you're looking for an archaeology nerd that's all about riddles and puzzles, let's talk about Randall Fucking Ascot.

Randall is the man that guided Professor Layton toward the path he's on today, headstrong about getting his best friend to see the more adventurous side of life that comes with archaeology. As an aspiring archaeologist, Randall constantly has his nose in the dirt, growing up as a boy prone to adventures with his childhood friends, Angela, Henry, and Alphonse. He strives to exit his father's shadow, wanting to stand on his own as an esteemed archaeologist.

Randall is a curious mind and strong of heart, always standing up for what he believes in or showing off what he knows. He has a flare for dramatics if he can make a discovery impressive to his friends and though his ego makes him act selfishly at times, Randall has been shown to be charitable and caring, though not always putting others before himself. This is evident when Henry, who is a friend and servant to Randall, is scolded for playing with his toys as a child. However Randall defends him and gives the toy robot to Henry, who cherishes it even into adulthood.

By another example, as a teenager, Randall dated Angela, and though she objected to him entering dangerous ruins for fear of his safety, Henry assists Randall with lying about it being his final excavation. Randall acts selfishly in going to the ruins, going as far as to lying about his promise. However, underlying his desire to be renowned, he wanted to prove to Angela's parents that he was good enough for her. To Randall the act is two sides of the same coin, but sometimes he fails to see how his actions impacts others, so caught up in his own world.

Randall's character can be defined by persistence as equally as stubbornness, enthusiastic as well as overwhelming, but no one can deny that he embodies the spirit of adventure and discovery, always ready to learn something new and show everyone what he's made of. The pursuit of knowledge is a serious endeavor for him, enough that he was willing to sacrifice his life to give Hershel the Mask of Chaos he worked so hard to discover. No matter the size of what stands in his way, Randall is fearless, albeit recklessly at times, and will always get what he is gunning for.

Randall, as he stands where I'm pulling him from, is suffering from amnesia, though it is suggested his selfish behavior has considerably dampened thanks to the good graces of the man that saved him when he fell in the Akbadain ruins.

However once he regains his memories (not where I am pulling him from, but for the sake of future gameplay), Randall is quick to believe the lies portrayed by the letter Descole sent him to turn him into the Masked Gentleman, a figure that torments the town of Monte d'Or, a town built on the foundation of Henry and Angela's love and friendship, as it was established while they searched and waited for Randall to return to them, refusing to believe he had died when he was lost to the ruins. While some memories do return to him, his desire for revenge easily seeps into him, suggesting Randall has a capacity to be bitter enough to throw his simple life away to take back what he feels he has earned. It equally displays how important acknowledgement and fame is to Randall, as it was something he truly wanted when he was younger.
